Chapter 4: The Secret is Told

Here is the story… Somehow, a few years ago, a Ko Tengu was born. The power that the Tengu was given was that of evil power. Whatever evil was in the world, he gained power from it. His name was Russell Skidriff."

"That's a weird name," Sketch said.

"Nevertheless, that's what he was called. As he grew up a severe hatred of Utopia grew inside of him. His evil and rage began to press him into destroying the planet and its inhabitants."

"So those problems in Japan were his doing?"

"Yes. But no so far from the city was the mountaintop of the great Sensei Kazano. Kazano is a Karasu Tengu of great stature, and he is the wielder of the famed Myth Sword, a sword of great power that enables the bearer to access a powerful armor that boosts their status and their abilities. Only legends can hold the Myth Sword, and Kazano, being the oldest and most worthy, was given the task of defending the sword."

"So what exactly does Kazano have to do with all this?"

"He sensed the evil Tengu's presence and knew that something had to be done. It is said that no Tengu is evil, but the reason that such a statement is true is because the evil Tengus are destroyed by the good-natured Tengus…despite their mischievous ways, of course."

Sketch smiled. "Of course."

"Kazano realized that Russell's evil had exceeded anything that he could imagine, and he knew that help had to be sought. That's when he created me."

Sketch was surprised. "He created you?!"

"That's right. I'm nothing more than a puppet of flesh and bone."

"I can't believe it! A Karasu literally made you! But for what purpose?"

"I had told you before that I was a, um…'gopher,' as you call it. I 'gopher' people whom I would judge to make great Tengu warriors that can help up defeat Russell."

"But why in America? There aren't any Tengus here!"

"Karasu had known that many strong-willed people live here, and that this was a good place to start my search. A person doesn't have to be a Tengu when I find them. I'm able to change them into one when I find they're worthy."

Sketch held his chin. "I see. Did you find anyone yet?"

Jamal smiled. "Yes, I have, actually. One."

"Really? Are they here?"

Jamal nodded. "Yes they are."

"Where?"

Jamal raised his hand and pointed at Sketch. "Here."

Sketch was stunned. "…Me?!"

"That's right, Sketch. I admire your mind and your loyalty. I think you'd be perfect."

"You must be mistaken! I mean…I'm not worthy of being a Tengu! I've been known to mess up a lot of things! I can't work very well under pressure! I'm not very strong!"

"You'll learn that you are mistaken," said Jamal.

"So…you actually think I'd make a good Tengu?!"

"Yes."

Sketch blushed. "Well…I…thank you! Thank you very much! I'll try my best to help!"

Jamal smiled. "There's that loyalty I was talking about before!"

Sketch's blushing face turned from blue to bright red.

"Now then, Sketch…you are to become a Ko Tengu. What powers do you wish to hold? Keep in mind that what you choose cannot be changed."

"Gosh, hmm…" Sketch thought for a moment. "Let's see. Fire? Naw… Maybe ice? Um…uh uh."

Jamal sighed. "Having a little trouble deciding?"

"Yes! I'm not sure what I want to do!"

"I see." Jamal looked at a poster nearby. It showed a great storm rumbling over a city. He eyed Sketch, thinking of the possibilities. "Perhaps you should try this?"

Sketch looked to where Jamal pointed. "Storm powers? Hmm…"

"It'll allow you to control water and lightning abilities, and you can decide how much power you want of each. Less water abilities mean more lightning abilities, and vice versa, or you can balance them."

"Well…that sounds interesting! Okay, I'll go for that!"

"So how do you wish to balance your powers?"

"Hmm…Y'know, that thing you said about more of the lightning abilities sounded good."

"Okay. Is this your final decision?"

Sketch thought for a moment. "Yes."

Jamal nodded. "Very well, then." He placed his hands on Sketch's forehead. "This may feel a little weird." Jamal began to grow a bright white, and the glow became a burst. Sketch was feeling an odd force pulsing through his body as Jamal kept his hands on his head. The power that began to form seemed to spark a small bit of pain in his body, and he began to grit his teeth. Jamal kept his position while Sketch tried to keep his amidst the uncomfortable conditions of the process.

A minute later Jamal removed his hands from Sketch's head. "Congratulations, Sketch. You are now a Ko Tengu."

Sketch felt a little disoriented. "Th…thank you…Jamal." He tried to stand up and wound up stumbling to the floor.

Jamal laid Sketch in bed. "It may take a small while for your body to get used to your new form. Rest for a while and then I'll teach you how to use your powers."

"Okay…"

As Jamal left the room, Sketch smiled to himself.

"Incredible…I'm…a legend!"

After he said this, he fell into a deep sleep.
