Chapter 11: The Confession

The next day had come, and Donna and Iris were full of questions. They had been pondering about Sketch and Jamal, the jetpack, the company, and plenty of other things. They were confused and wanted to get things straightened out.

"How on earth did you build that jetpack so fast?" asked Iris. "And why did it seem so flawless?"

"Where did you get all those parts anyway?" Donna added.

"Why did they look so new?"

"What are we making in this company anyway?"

"What kind of nut are you to start making jetpacks?"

"What's gonna happen next?"

"QUIET!" Sketch shouted, covering his ears. "You're asking too many questions!"

"Some of the things we've been noticing were kinda hard to ignore," Iris said. "We want answers. Now speak up!"

Sketch looked at Jamal and sighed. "You'd better answer some of their questions, Jamal."

Jamal approached the girls. "Okay. I must be truthful. You wish to know where I got those parts? I made them."

Donna and Iris were puzzled. "What do you mean, 'you made them?'"

"I'm able to create any form of matter from scratch. That's my power."

Iris raised her eyebrow. "Power?"

"I don't get it," said Donna.

Jamal made his wings appear. "I'm a Tengu, a Japanese legend."

The girls jumped back. They stared in uncertainty and disbelief.

Donna shook her head. "Whoa…you're a freak!"

"Donna! Don't say that!" said Iris. "Legends should be treated with respect!" She turned to Sketch. "Did you know anything about this?"

Sketch smiled and extended his wings.

"Oh, jeez!" Iris was shocked. "You are, too!"

Sketch nodded. "Yup."

"But…but why did you make this company? Why are you doing business? Everywhere in Utopia people respect legends! They worship them and praise their power! They're stronger and more able than anyone else in the world is! So why are you doing this job?"

"To make a living," Sketch said simply. "And if you're wondering why we're making things like jetpacks, we're aiming for innovative machines and technology, things that were never made before."

Donna and Iris looked at each other. "Okay," said Donna. "You must pardon me for asking, but what exactly is a Tengu?"

"As I mentioned before," Jamal replied, "A Tengu is a Japanese legend. Tengus are winged creatures that harness powers of nature. There are two common kinds of Tengus known to exist. One is the Karasu Tengu, with the form of a bird. It can control any power of nature it chooses, and it is able to teleport anywhere and change shape at will. The other is the Ko Tengu, winged beings that control only a certain part of nature. That's what we are."

"You control powers of nature?" Iris asked Sketch.

Sketch smiled. "That's right. But only a few."

"He is able to use lightning and create storms," said Jamal. "Meanwhile, as I said, I can create matter freely, and I'm able to access other dimensions."

Donna's eyes grew wider. "Whoa…"

"Are you born a Ko Tengu?" asked Iris.

"I was," said Jamal. "But Sketch wasn't. Most of the time Ko Tengus are made from worthy people. Karasu Tengus and a few Ko Tengus have the ability to change a normal person into a Ko Tengu."

"So who changed you into a Ko Tengu, Sketch?" asked Donna.

Sketch pointed to Jamal. "He did."

Donna's jaw dropped. "You're kidding!"

"It's true," said Jamal. "I selected him for a purpose…a very important one at that."

"What is it?"

Jamal told them the whole story. He told them about Russell Skidriff, the trouble in Japan, Sensei Kazano, and his creation and mission. The girls were intrigued.

"Wow!" Donna looked to Sketch. "Sketch, you're a soldier!"

Sketch blushed.

"I'm still looking for people worthy of the Ko Tengu abilities," said Jamal, "and it isn't easy finding people who'd risk themselves to save the world."

Donna looked at Iris. "Maybe we…"

"…could help you?" Iris said to Jamal.

"You? You don't consider such a thing dangerous?"

"We've done plenty of dangerous things before," said Donna.

"Besides, I'm sure you need all the help you can get," added Iris.

Jamal scratched his head. "I…thank you for your interest in helping, ladies. But such a decision requires thought. I might have to think about this for a while."

"Um, okay," said Donna.

"You must excuse us," said Sketch. He escorted Jamal into a private room. "Are you okay, Jamal?"

"Yeah…but I'm really trying to decide while they know now if they really deserve the Ko Tengu powers."

"They do want to help," Sketch said.

"Yes, they are quite capable and very brave." Jamal rubbed his head. "I just don't know…"

"You still have time," said Sketch. "Try to think real hard about it."

Jamal sighed. "I'll try, but it won't be easy…"
