Chapter 9: Discussing Something New

And so the Tengu Company had begun its first operational workday. Sketch began drawing up blueprints and diagrams, Jamal "fetched" spare parts to recycle for assembly, and Donna and Iris assembled the pieces. They started off with some simple things such as toasters and televisions, but when Sketch introduced a special blueprint, the others stared at him with wide eyes.

"A jetpack?!" said Donna.

"You're crazy!" said Iris. "Who would want to buy that?"

"Whoever wants to go from Point A to Point B without facing traffic," said Sketch with a smile. "I designed this to be safe, easy to use, and economically sound."

"I don't know," said Iris. "That would require quite a bit of fuel, don't you think?"

"Hey, I didn't exactly design this model to travel across the Pacific Ocean. This was made for short-distance travel."

Iris was suspicious. "And what exactly do you mean by short-distance travel?"

Sketch looked at his blueprints. "Well, from what I estimate, it can travel nonstop on its fuel capacity for about 120 miles."

Donna looked at Sketch oddly. "And you actually think it's possible to make?"

"Nothing's impossible," said Jamal. "I think we're able to do it. Don't you, Sketch?"

Sketch nodded. "Sure we can! It'll take a little extra effort, but I know it's possible!"

Donna and Iris looked at each other. They looked rather puzzled and uncertain for a moment and shrugged.

"Well, if you say so," said Donna.

"Great!" said Sketch. "Let's get going!"

As Sketch told Jamal about the needed materials, Donna and Iris stepped away for a private chat.

"Is he crazy?!" said Donna. "Our first day on the job, and he wants us to build jetpacks?!"

"Yes, I know it's quite farfetched. But maybe he's on to something. You know, if the jetpack is successful in the market, we could gain a good profit! I don't know of anyone else out there manufacturing jetpacks for the public, do you?"

Donna thought for a moment. "Well…no. But what if it isn't successful?"

"I'm not sure. I guess we may have to do something else to please the populace."

"Yeah, maybe…" Donna looked at Jamal. "Where's he getting all this metal anyway? And correct me if I'm wrong, but they sure as heck don't look like old bits of parts."

"I'm not sure. Hmm…"

They both looked at Jamal in suspicion. Jamal glanced over to them and noticed their curious stares.

"Sketch, maybe the girls could use a break," said Jamal. "After all, they've been working for six hours straight."

"Yeah, you're right." Sketch called to the girls. "Okay girls, you can take a break."

They shook their heads to revert their attention. "Huh? Oh, yeah. Sure." They walked outside and sat in the grass, thinking to themselves.

"So what do you think of Sketch?" asked Donna.

"He's very nice," said Iris, nodding as she placed her goggles from her eyes to her forehead. "He's not like the other employers. They pretty much chew out their employees if they make the slightest mistake. But he just gives us encouragement to do better, and that certainly gives me some comfort."

"Yeah, it's been giving me quite a lot of comfort," agreed Donna. "Y'now, he's kinda cute, too!"

Iris looked at Donna. "Are you saying you're beginning to like him?"

Donna looked blank for a moment, thinking about what she just said. But she nodded. "Yeah, I guess so. I mean, he's nice, he doesn't really acts like he overpowers us, he's very fair when it comes to supervising our work, and besides…he's cute!"

Iris looked into the sky. "I suppose you're right. He's certainly not like anyone I've ever seen." She scratched her chin. "Do you think he dyes his fur blue?"

Donna shook her head. "No. You're not gonna believe this, but I think that color is real!"

Iris was perplexed. "I wonder if he's nice just so we don't make fun of him…"

"Doubt it. If he were that concerned about his fur I think he'd act more like the other bosses around here. After all, it'd be a way of gaining a high rank in his life and building up his self-esteem."

"You may be right." Iris sighed. "This company sure has its mysteries. I mean, what the heck is a 'Tengu,' anyway?"

Donna thought for a moment. "Maybe it's one of those anagram names. Each letter stands for a word or something."

"What do you think it stands for, then?"

"Hmm…" Donna scratched her head. "Today's Engineering Neotechnics Going Underway?"

"I don't think so."

"Maybe we should ask them about it," said Donna. "If they don't know, then I'm really gonna get worried."

"Good idea. Let's go ask them."

They went inside, and the sight they saw stunned them. Sketch and Jamal had apparently managed to put a jetpack together themselves without their assistance, and within very little time. Sketch looked toward the girls, whose ears drooped and whose jaws dropped.

"Oh! Girls, I'm glad you're back from your break. Jamal managed to put this all together to show you what it should look like!"

Iris looked at Jamal with wide eyes. "How did you assemble that thing in such a short amount of time?" she asked in confusion.

"Ambition." Jamal shrugged. "It doesn't matter now, does it?"

Iris and Donna, with stunned looks still on their faces, slowly shook their heads.

Sketch smiled. "Well then, the next thing we may want to do is test it. Has this been fueled, Jamal?"

"Yes, it has," Jamal replied.

The girls' eyes grew even wider.

"Great!" said Sketch, not giving any concern about the girls' uncertainties. "That means we'll begin much sooner! Let's go outside and test it out!" Sketch and Jamal began walking out the back door. Sketch turned to look at the two girls, frozen in shock, and called to them. "Are you coming?"

The girls shook themselves out of their startled state. "Er…sure. Hold on."

Sketch and Jamal headed out the door. Iris and Donna waited until they were a good distance away before discussing what they didn't believe.

"How did they do it?" asked Donna in frustration and confusion. "They assembled the jetpack faster than we could build a toaster!"

Iris nodded. "I know. This is too weird. It doesn't comply with logic or common sense! No one is that fast!"

"Do you think that jetpack of theirs will work?" asked Donna.

"Haste makes waste," Iris answered with a grin. "If they built it that fast it's bound to fly apart rather than fly straight. It should be amusing to watch!"

Donna grinned with her. "Yes, it should be interesting," Donna agreed. "Let's go see how it all comes out!"

With that in mind they both walk out the door, giggling at the thought of what may happen to Sketch, Jamal, and the jetpack.
