Chapter 8: The New Employees
As the week went on, Sketch and Jamal began to organize everything inside the factory. They continuously checked the mail in hopes that someone would apply for jobs. But no one applied. They started to lose hope.
"It won't be easy running this whole factory by ourselves," said Sketch in concern. "This is definitely no two-man job."
"I know. But unless we have someone who'll apply for it, we really have no alternatives."
Sketch sighed. He looked out the window. "Does anyone know this place is out here?"
"I don't know," said Jamal. "Perhaps we're too far from civilization."
"But I would've figured someone would've known about this factory by now." Sketch grew disappointed. "I knew something like this would happen."
"We're not sunk yet," said Jamal. "We still have another week before the classifieds don't post up our ad anymore. Maybe by then some people will apply."
Sketch looked at Jamal. "For our sake, Jamal, I really hope so."
But another week went by, and their classified no longer showed up in the paper. They looked through the mail and still found no applications. They both became depressed.
"I'm sorry, Sketch," said Jamal. "This was my fault. I didn't know that it would be so hard to find any workers."
"It's okay, Jamal," said Sketch. "It was a nice try. We didn't know how anyone would react or what would happen. I just wish at least one or two people asked for a job."
Jamal patted Sketch on the head. "I guess this factory is dead before it was even brought to life, huh?"
Sketch sighed. "Yeah…"
They opened the doors of their factory and began the walk home. Suddenly they heard voices calling them.
"Hey! Hey you! Wait!"
They looked behind them to find two girls running toward them. One was a reddish-orange cat with red bobbed hair and attire much like what Sketch was wearing; she wore a yellow shirt and blue jeans. The other was a snow-white fox with spiky hair, a black tank top and black pants, and there were goggles on her forehead.
"Are you the guys that own that place?" asked the fox, pointing to their factory.
Sketch blushed. "Um…yes, we are."
"We saw your ad in the paper," said the cat, "and we were wondering if you still had job openings!"
Sketch and Jamal looked at each other. They looked at the girls. "Yes, we do."
"Oh, that's wonderful!" said the fox. "We'd like to work at your factory!"
"We don't have any applications or resumes written out," said the cat, "but if you wish to do a job interview, we're willing to cooperate!"
Sketch smiled. "We can do that! By the way…what are your names?"
"I'm Donna Paige," said the cat, nodding her head.
"And I'm Iris Chymara," said the fox, bowing.
"Well, Donna, Iris, let's go into the factory and do your interviews!"
The girls cheered as they went into the factory. When the girls were inside, Sketch and Jamal also cheered, and they also entered the factory.
"So you've had experience in making technology and machinery?" asked Sketch.
"Yes, we have!" said Donna. "Mostly machinery, but we've done some things with technology, too!"
"I see. What do you make?"
"Usually car parts and a few robots," answered Iris.
"Robots?" asked Jamal.
"Sure! Not like the ones you see in the sci-fi movies, but more like the ones you've seen used at NASA or on BotBattles."
"Hmm… very interesting. Did you ever use these robots for such purposes?"
"Well, we haven't had much thought about NASA…" began Iris.
"…But we hope that we can enter into the BotBattle Championships someday!" said Donna.
"That sounds exciting!" said Sketch. "Maybe someday we could enter one of your robots in that championship!"
"That would be great!" said Donna. "We might be able to advertise for your company, too!"
Sketch raised his eyebrows. "Really?"
"Sure! If our robot is a success, I'm sure people would love to hear about the company that created our robot! We might rank up with the most famous ones, like The Bull and Onion!"
"Well!" Sketch looked at Jamal. "This seems rather intersting!"
"I agree," said Jamal. He turned to the girls. "You don't happen to have any of your works handy, do you?"
Iris turned to Donna. "Show them, Donna!"
She searched her pocket and pulled out a small six-wheeled robot with a power switch. It was smaller than a cassette tape, and Sketch and Jamal were interested to see what it did. "Do you have a piece of paper I can borrow?" asked Donna.
"Um, sure!" Jamal got a piece of paper, and Donna began drawing a curvy pathway with an ink pen.
"Now watch," said Iris. "This is a year of hard work you'll be watching." She placed the little robot on the paper and turned it on. Immediately the robot began moving, and when it found the pathway that Donna drew, it followed it flawlessly, turning wherever a curve was and rotating in the opposite direction when the path ended, following the path the other way. Sketch and Jamal stared with wide eyes.
"That's amazing!" said Sketch in fascination. "How long have you guys done this kind of stuff?"
"For about five years now," said Donna.
"We like tinkering with this kind of stuff," said Iris, "and we figured that working here can turn our work into a profit!"
"Well, I'm convinced that you'll be valuable members of our work force!" Sketch and Jamal shook their hands. "Welcome to the Tengu Company!"
As Sketch said this, Jamal began to think about the girls. They're quite skilled and very anxious. I wonder if they're also possibilities for the mission…
