Chapter 17: The Pestering Continues

The next morning the Tengu Company met at Sketch's house, the location being of Donna and Iris's choosing. They brought their suitcases and began to plot out what they were going to do about travelling to Japan.

"Okay, here's what we'll do," Jamal began. "We will need to go to the airport and buy tickets for a flight to Japan. Afterwards we will--"

"Wait a minute!" Donna shouted. "We're Ko Tengus! We have wings! Why do we have to take a plane when we can fly by ourselves?"

"Because you guys haven't been built up enough to last a whole solo flight above the Pacific Ocean," Jamal answered. "That's why we're taking this trip. Kazano will teach you how to grow stronger."

Donna sighed. Iris patted her on the shoulder.

"As I was saying," Jamal resumed, "After we arrive in Japan we will need to travel to the Shrine Hills. Amidst the mountaintop shrines is Kazano's Tengu Shrine."

"Do you know where it is exactly?" asked Sketch.

"To be honest, I'm really not sure."

"That's a big help," said Iris sarcastically.

"I'm sure my intuition will be able to point the way," Jamal reassured.

"Let's hope it does," said Sketch.

"Sketch," Jamal said, "could you purchase a ticket for me? I told you that I don't work with money."

"Sure!" said Sketch. "So, I assume we should all get moving to the airport?"

Donna and Iris leaned closer to Sketch. "Lead the way," they said with a mischievous smile.

Sketch swallowed hard and stood up. "Uh, yeah. Let's go."

And so, the others began to follow Sketch to the airport.

When they arrived, they purchased tickets for a nonstop flight to Tokyo. They were first class, and they were informed that there would be two seats in a row on the plane they would be riding. While Sketch and Jamal waited for the plane to arrive, Donna and Iris were discussing the seats.

"So how are we gonna sit in the plane?" asked Iris.

"I don't know," said Donna. "I'd really like a chance to sit with Sketch on the flight."

"Me too!" said Sketch. "But we can't both sit next to him! Remember, there's only two in a row on the plane!

"I know…" said Iris. "So what do we do?"

They both thought to themselves.

"I've got an idea!" Donna said. "Our tickets let us use a block of seats…two by two! We could sit in the front two seats, and the boys can sit in the back!"

"I see!" said Iris. "That way we can just look back and there he is!"

"Right!"

Sketch overheard their discussion and whispered something to Jamal. Jamal laughed, nodded, and went with Sketch to a different part of the airport.

When the plane arrived, Sketch and his friends boarded. Iris and Donna sat in their specified seats, near the front of the plane. Sketch and Jamal, however, continued to move to the back.

"Hey!" Donna shouted. "What're you doing! Your seats are up here!"

Sketch smiled. "Not anymore, they're not," he said.

"We had gotten our tickets reassigned while you were making out your little schemes," said Jamal, also smiling. "Sketch doesn't like the fact that you won't give him a moment's peace."

Donna grumbled.

"Sit down, Donna," said Iris.

Donna whined. "But Iris…"

Iris grabbed Donna's arm. "Trust me."

Confused, Donna slipped into her seat.

"Don't sweat it," said Iris. "Keep in mind that once we're in the air, we'll be able to unfasten the safety belts!"

Donna looked at Iris in uncertainty, then understanding. She grinned and giggled with Iris.

Within minutes, the plane lifted off the ground. The girls waited anxiously for the "Fasten Safety Belt" light to turn off. Suddenly it turned off, and the girls were up and out of their seats, immediately headed for Sketch's seat. Meanwhile Sketch noticed the girls approaching, and he was growing tense.

"Uh oh," Sketch said. "Here they come! Now what?"

"Relax," said Jamal. "I've got an idea."

Jamal whispered in Sketch's ear. Sketch began to smile deviously. He held out one hand and placed it on a window. Suddenly what was once a calm sunny day had turned into a terrible gusty thunderstorm. The plane's "Fasten Safety Belt" lights turned back on, and an announcement on the loudspeaker began to ring out.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are experiencing some turbulence in the skies. We advise that you remain seated and keep your seat belts fastened."

Donna and Iris looked at each other. "What?!"

Suddenly the plane banked to the left and the girls tripped from the unsteady level.

"Aw, what a time for turbulence!" said Donna.

"We'd better get to our seats," Iris suggested. "Maybe we'll get our chance later on the flight."

Slowly they got up from off the floor and made their way to their seats. They fastened their safety belts and awaited the turbulence to pass. Then the "Fasten Safety Belt" lights were turned off and another announcement echoed through the airplane...

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have successfully made it through the turbulence and it looks like we'll be having some smooth sailing from here on in."

After hearing the announcement, the girls decided to unfasten their seat belts to give it another go.

But something was wrong. Their seat belts wouldn't unfasten. No matter how much they tried the seat belts wouldn't budge. The girls grew frustrated as they continued to fiddle with the buckle.

Jamal looked at the girls and smiled. He turned to Sketch. "It appears they won't be any trouble to you now," he said. "They're too busy trying to unfasten the seat belts I welded to the buckles! They won't be able to get out until the plane touches down!"

Sketch smiled. "You've got a pretty cool power, Jamal…toying with the states of matter." He stretched and sighed with relief. "Finally, I can relax on this flight!"
