Chapter 18: Journey to the Shrine Hills

The plane safely landed in the Tokyo airport a day later. Jamal secretly set the seat belt back into its normal state, and after the girls got out of their seat belts, the group made their way to the airport exit, taking a good look at the great Tokyo city.

"Wow!" Sketch said in amazement. "This is one heck of a city!"

"Yeah," said Iris and Donna both also amazed at the sights of Tokyo. "A guys can get lost just trying to find their house here!"

"This place is wonderful!" Sketch jumped in excitement and happiness. "A city just booming with innovative technology! You can just smell the magic!"

Donna and Iris sniffed the air. They held their noses.

"It smells more like car exhaust," said Donna.

Sketch waved his hand at them and shook his head. "Aw, you girls couldn't comprehend how much I've looked forward to coming here! Jamal, you know, don't you?"

Jamal nodded.

"Fine, fine," Donna said. "So Jamal, now that we're here in Japan, where do we go next?"

"Well, now have to reach the Shrine Hills. They're quite a distance away, but we can still walk."

"How many shrines are in those hills?" asked Sketch.

"A little over a hundred," Jamal answered.

"Okay," Sketch said nodding. "So it shouldn't be too hard to find, right?"

"Um…" Jamal swallowed hard. "Right. We'd better get going."

Jamal led the way to the Shrine Hills, while the others were following close by, still admiring the grand scenery of the city.

It wasn't long before the Tengu Company was exiting Tokyo, and they continued their hike through breezy fields of long grass.

"Gosh," Donna said looking all around, "Japan is a beautiful place!"

"Yes," said Jamal, "I must admit that the scenery here is very friendly. But you're only looking at a part of Japan. There are places that look very dangerous when up close, like Mt. Fujiyama."

"Mt. Fuji?" Sketch said. "It doesn't seem to look that dangerous!"

"You were never up close to it," said Jamal.

Sketch sighed. "Maybe you're right."

Jamal stopped. "There they are."

The group looked to find rolling hills sparsely populated by many marble shrines. They admired the tranquil beauty of the scene.

"Boy," said Sketch in awe, "they sure picked a nice place to put these shrines!"

Iris nodded. "I agree."

"Me too!" said Donna. "It's beautiful!"

"So where is Kazano's shrine?" asked Sketch.

"Well, as I mentioned before," Jamal stated, "I'm unable to remember the exact location. But the one thing I do know is that his shrine had been built on one of the highest hills."

"Figures," said Sketch. "I'm sure Karasu Tengus enjoy the air up there."

"Not only that," Jamal added, "but those legends that are considered very rare and powerful are built on higher hills."

"Cool!" said Sketch. "So I'm assuming that one up there is his?"

Sketch was pointing to a lone shrine on a high hill. Jamal looked at it from Sketch's stance.

"I think so," said Jamal. "Let's go see."

The group made their way to the shrine, where their legs had a hard time walking up the somewhat steep slope of the hillside. They stopped to rest for a moment when they were halfway away from their destination. As they reached the top, they looked at the shrine up close. The small marble building was surrounded by a fruitful garden.

"What an interesting shrine!" said Donna. "It looks like the Garden of Eden!"

Sketch looked at Jamal, who was scratching his head while looking at the site. "This isn't it, is it?"

Jamal sighed and shook his head. "I'm sorry."

At that moment a voice rang out of the shrine. "May I help you?"

The group looked at the shrine to find a figure standing inside. The figure began to come closer, and the others looked in amazement at what was emerging. It was a gold-colored fox lady with silver eyes. Her hair was wrapped in a bun and the remaining strands of her hair were bunched in ponytails. She wore a pink kimono robe, and what looked like a shoulder-strap sash went over her left shoulder, with a drop at the low end of her right side. The picture on her drop was the yin-yang symbol, while the picture on her shoulder sash was unclear. In her hand she held a bamboo staff. What caught everyone's immediate attention was the fox lady's nine long tails that flowed like the long grass in the wind.

Sketch was hardly able to speak while looking at the enchanting fox lady. "I…uh…we…you…"

"Allow me to introduce myself," the fox lady said with a soft, soothing tone. "I am Madam Tenko, the guardian of the Kyubi Kitsune shrine."

Jamal shook as he began to explain. "F-f-forgive us, m-ma'am," he stuttered. "W-w-we were l-looking for the T-T-Tengu Shrine!"

"Don't be afraid," Madam Tenko said. "I don't mean you any harm. You are not far from the Tengu Shrines." She looked at the group carefully and noticed their exhaustion amidst their shock. "You look tired. If you wish, you can rest here before you go on your way."

Jamal slowly nodded. "Th-th-thank you, m-m-ma'am."

Madam Tenko smiled. She led the others to a small table outside of the shrine. She set them down on the grass because she had no chairs to offer them.

"Now relax," said Madam Tenko. "I will find some nourishment for you." With that, she re-entered her shrine.

The others looked at each other in amazement. "Whoa…"

"What was that?" Sketch asked in shock. "I've never seen anything like that before!"

"She's a Kyubi Kitsune!" said Jamal, who was in just as much shock as Sketch. "I've heard of them before! They're noted to be one of the highest Kitsune classes alive!"

Sketch scratched his head. "What's a Kitsune?"

Jamal took off his cap. "I suppose I'd better fill you in on the Kitsune Legend, hm?"

As Jamal said this, Madam Tenko approached the others with drinks and a platter full of Japanese cuisine. "I hope you enjoy," said Madam Tenko. "This is my best recipe."

They thanked Madam Tenko--to the best of their abilities, at least, since they were still rather stunned at her beauty--and they began eating her home-cooked delicacy.
