Chapter 19: Madam Tenko and Kitsunes

After they finished their meal, which they told Madam Tenko was the most delicious food they've ever tasted, they decided to chat for a while.

"So, Madam Tenko," Sketch began to ask, "I'm wondering…Is it possible to tell us the Legend of the Kitsune?"

Madam Tenko nodded. "Certainly!" She sat down with the others. "The Kitsune Legend," she began, "is very well-known here in Japan. There are low-class Kitsunes, which are the most common Kitsunes in the Orient, and the high-class Kyubi Kitsunes, which are much more rare."

"What are the differences?" asked Sketch.

"Well, besides the nine tails, Kyubi Kitsunes are stronger and faster than normal kitsunes, they are much more rare, they have many more abilities, and they are known to live much longer."

"How much longer?"

"A Kyubi Kitsune can live for a thousand years," Madam Tenko replied.

"Really? How old are you?"

"Sketch!" Jamal shouted. "That's not polite!"

"It's all right," said Madam Tenko. "I'm not insulted. I have lived on this earth for over 132 years."

"Wow! That's amazing!" Sketch said. "So you say Kitsunes are common here? How can you tell which foxes here are Kitsunes?"

"A Kitsune often wears a small picture on a part of their clothing…" She pointed to the picture on her shoulder sash. "…like this one. However, normal Kitsunes have a picture of a fox head to show they are of the low class. This is the Kyubi picture."

"But if they're so common," Sketch asked, "why are they such a popular legend?"

Madam Tenko cleared her throat. "Let me tell you the story of how the Kitsunes were born. It all began with my grandfather, the high priest Inari. He was a normal fox, one of an elderly age and of great wisdom. He lived amidst a fruitful garden and was at peace with the world around him. A long time ago Japan was at war between different clans. Inari did not like the thought of war and wished for the battles to stop, but he had known that he was not able to stop them by himself. Then one night he gazed into the stars, and it seemed that just after looking into the stars, he could see what was to come. He saw visions of misery and sadness, and the images of many souls engulfed in flames. He felt very changed after his vision, and he went to the battlefield to warn the soldiers of his vision. The soldiers thought him to be delusional and ignored his warnings of the future. Inari left the battlefield, disappointed that no one listened to his words."

"So what happened?" asked Donna.

"The next day Inari returned to the battlefield to find the land covered with fallen soldiers that were killed in battle. There appeared to be no survivors of the battle, and the eerie silence created a gloomy tone in the horizon. Suddenly he heard a groan from the hills. He found a lone soldier, mortally wounded, slowly crawling to him. The soldier had apologized for not heeding his warning, and before he died before Inari's feet he gave him an enchanted fan of eight feathers. Inari held the feathers close to his heart from that day on, and as each day passed he noticed the fan was somehow growing smaller. He also began to notice that he was able to do extraordinary feats. He was able to create fires in order to prevent the two sides from reaching each other. He also found himself changing himself into the appearance of a soldier in the battlefield and began leading the other warriors astray in order to prevent any conflict. Suddenly one day he noticed that his fan had disappeared, but when he looked behind him he noticed eight new tails had grown in the fan's place. On that very day it was proclaimed that there was finally peace in the land. It seemed the soldiers that lived through the battle had told of Inari and his magical deeds."

"And that's how the legend came to be?"

"That's correct," said Madam Tenko.

"I don't get it," Sketch said while scratching his head. "Some of the things Inari could do sounded a lot like what Karasu Tengus could do."

"I know," said Madam Tenko. "Karasu Tengus and Kyubi Kitsunes seem to have much in common. They both work clever mischief to ward off people when they do a wrong in the eyes of the Legend. They both have the abilities of changing their appearance and controlling natural powers. They are both known to be great legends during the early wars of Japan. In fact, it is because of the Karasu Tengus that the Kyubi Kitsunes came to be!"

Sketch's eyes grew wide. "Are you serious?"

"Yes," Madam Tenko stated. "The fan that Inari received from the soldier was of eight feathers. The feathers were those of a Karasu Tengu. The Karasu Powers slowly began to seep into Inari's soul, and he had ended up obtaining some of the powers of the Tengu!"

"Whoa!" Iris said in surprise. "That's amazing!"

"Of course," added Madam Tenko, "I should never have told you about the secret legend of the Kitsune. Shrines only offer the information to be given to the younger legends." Madam Tenko looked at Iris closely. "You are the only one really worthy to hear the story. You are the only Kitsune in this group!"

Iris was stunned. "I am?! A Kitsune?!"

"That explains it!" said Jamal. "That explains why you were able to use your Ko Tengu abilities quickly and with such ease!"

Madam Tenko was confused. "Ko Tengus? You are--"

"Yes," said Jamal. "We are the chosen soldiers of the Sensei Kazano. He desires that we--"

"Sensei Kazano?!" Madam Tenko said in surprise. "You are his soldiers?" She bowed down to the others. "I am sorry! I did not know you were working for him! Forgive me for being so rude a moment ago!"

The others looked at Madam Tenko's position, looked at each other and shrugged. "Ma'am, you don't have to kneel before us," Jamal said.

"But anyone who helps Kazano is someone I consider to be of great importance!" she said. "Sensei Kazano is a great legend! The greatest in the land! He has helped put and end to this war like my grandfather, but he took a more direct approach. He faced the two sides and confused them with his clever mischief, causing them to even wonder why they were in uniform! They were so disoriented they did not know that they were in a war! Because of that experience and many like it, the war had ended peacefully."

"Wow!" said Sketch. "Sensei Kazano is quite a guy!"

"He sure is!" Jamal replied. "His powers are unmatched! I think he's the only creature able to make a living being out of his own powers!"

Madam Tenko heard what Jamal said. "He can create people with his powers now?"

"Certainly!" said Jamal. "I'm living proof!"

Madam Tenko was stunned. "You were created by Sensei Kazano?!"

Jamal nodded.

Madam Tenko ran to Jamal and gave him a big hug. "Incredible!" she said. "I can't believe he's gotten so powerful after all these years!"

Sketch giggled. "Gosh, ma'am, you certainly seem to be quite obsessed with Kazano!"

"I can't help it," said Madam Tenko. "I'm in love with him!"

The others stepped back in shock. Madam Tenko suddenly began to blush.

"Oh, dear," she said. "Did I just say that out loud?"

"You're in love with Kazano?" asked Iris.

Madam Tenko sighed. "Yes. Ever since I saw him in person for the first time I had immediately fallen in love. But it seemed like he didn't know I existed. I tried to impress him by giving him gifts, but they didn't win his heart, though he was very grateful to me for giving them. Although that was a good enough feeling, I was hoping that he would fall in love with me just as I did with him! I tried many things to attract him, but nothing has worked."

"I assume that love is much more than flowers and candy," said Donna.

"How true," said Madam Tenko, sighing with disappointment. "If only it were that easy…"

"I know how you feel," said Donna.

"Me too," added Iris.

"I'd hate to leave you like this, ma'am," Sketch said, "but we have to get going. We really must go see Sensei Kazano and train."

"Wait!" Madam Tenko shouted. "Let me take you to his shrine! I wish to see him again! It's been so long since I've seen him last! I beg you...please let me come!"

Sketch looked at the others, then at Madam Tenko. "All right then! Lead the way!"

Madam Tenko smiled. "Thank you. Follow me!"

With that, she began leading the others to the shrine of Sensei Kazano. After hearing what Kazano was able to do, the group was very anxious to see him in person.
