Chapter 23: Sketch is Hurt
After ten minutes of continuous searching, Kazano found Sketch huddled up behind a nearby Kitsune shrine, where he was crying. Uncertain as to whether or not he should directly confront Sketch or not, Kazano landed a far distance away from where Sketch was sitting. Kazano's keen eye could see a mix of sadness and anger in Sketch's eyes. Slowly he approached from behind.
"I know you're there, Kazano," Sketch said with some force.
Kazano, though somewhat surprised when he realized that he was dicovered, continued to approach at a slightly faster pace. He set beside Sketch, who looked away from Kazano.
"What bothers you, Tucker?" asked Kazano. "Is it what I had done to you?"
Sketch only nodded.
"I apologize," Kazano said. "I suppose I had tested a part of you that should not have been riled."
Sketch only sighed.
Kazano looked into the sky, then at Sketch. "Your friends looked badly beaten. Did you do that?"
"I wanted to be alone," said Sketch. He still looked away.
"I'm afraid I was the one that sent them to find you," Kazano admitted. "If you said that you needed time alone, I would have gladly let you be."
"I didn't feel like talking back there," said Sketch, sounding a little more upset.
"Was it necessary to harm your friends because of this?" Kazano asked.
"It was when they began dragging me by my ankles," Sketch growled.
Kazano seemed a little shocked. "They did that to you?"
Sketch turned to look at the ground. "Well, Donna and Iris did. Jamal tried to take me by the arm."
"You do not like those two girls, do you?" Kazano asked. "You can be honest."
Sketch hesitated to answer. "Well, they seem to be kinda nice, but their affections are way too strong for me to handle."
"I see…" Kazano looked carefully at Sketch. "You seemed to do quite a lot of damage to them. When they arrived back at my shrine they fainted."
Sketch seemed a little surprised. "Really?"
"Yes," Kazano answered. "You must have really shown a lot of strength. Tell me…how did you do it?"
Sketch scratched his head. "It's…hard to say. Oftentimes I don't have enough drive to fight. But when someone makes me mad enough, I somehow get this impulse to fight. It isn't too enjoyable, but that's how I operate."
Kazano nodded. "I see now."
Sketch turned at looked at Kazano, who looked lost in thought. "Is there something wrong?"
Kazano reverted his attention to Sketch. "I have reason to believe," he began, "that you are a 'rage fighter.'"
Sketch was confused. "What exactly does that mean?"
"A 'rage fighter' is a type of person who gains great strength and knowledge of fighting when they are riled to an extreme degree. From what I can tell, you are a very good example. I sensed a notion of this when you reacted to that comment I made before our battle in a defensive, somewhat angry way. When I saw Jamal, Paige and Chymara beaten as harshly as they were, I lost all doubt of the theory."
"But I can't fight anyone like you, even if I am a 'rage fighter,'" Sketch whimpered.
"That's why you're here. I suppose I shouldn't have treated you as I did before, but you are in training."
"You expect me to develop to your level by nearly killing me?!" Sketch began to shout.
"I wasn't trying to kill you," said Kazano. "I can sense a person's limitations. Strange as it seems, your limitations really aren't so limited at all."
"What does that mean?" asked Sketch. "Is that some sort of flattery or something?"
"No, Tucker. Each of you has some set amount of capabilities. Jamal's and Chymara's are better than Paige's, but yours seem to surpass theirs easily."
Sketch began to grow interested. "How do you figure that?"
"It's an odd sense. A teacher should know the potential of their students. I do. You are an enigma to me, Tucker. From your blue fur to your virtual lack of limitations. It puzzles me. It seems as though you are not at all a normal person."
Sketch was growing very confused. "What exactly do you mean?"
"I'm not sure," said Kazano. "But I feel that you have great potential for more than any of us may know." Kazano stood up. "It's time to go back, Tucker. Or do you wish to stay here longer?"
Sketch was silent for a moment. He then stood up and nodded. "I'm coming." As he began the flight back, he pondered what Kazano was saying about his "great potential." The whole idea of such a thing puzzled him, as he never felt like he had any potential at all...
