Chapter 22: Sketch and Kazano Fight

The four Ko Tengu trainees emerged from the dome, all of them wearing what looked like karate outfits. They seemed to have trouble standing straight.

"Geez!" said Sketch. "Is it me or are these clothes heavy?"

"Ugh!" Iris said, wiping her forehead. "You're not the only one!"

Donna fell to the ground, panting heavily. "I'm already tired, and I just took ten steps in this getup! Someone help me get up!"

Jamal looked at Sketch.

"Aw, do I have to?" Sketch whined.

"It would be a polite thing to do," said Jamal. "That's what Kazano told me."

Sketch sighed and helped Donna up. "Sometimes I wish Kazano kept his mouth shut."

"He already does," said Iris.

Sketch sighed. "Oh, that's right."

Jamal grew upset at Sketch's comment and grabbed him by the neck, choking him. "How dare you talk about my father like that! Take it back! TAKE IT BACK!"

"Okay! Okay!" Sketch gargled. "I'm sorry! Let go!"

Jamal let go of Sketch, who coughed heavily after the lack of air.

"I saw that, Jamal."

Jamal looked behind him to find Kazano standing with his arms folded.

"Kazano!"

Kazano shook his head. "That wasn't nice."

Jamal looked at the ground in shame. "I'm sorry, sir. But he was speaking roughly of you, saying that you--"

Kazano looked at Sketch sternly. "I know what he said."

Iris and Donna pointed at Sketch. "Ooh! You're in trouble!"

Sketch blushed and backed away.

Kazano cleared his throat. "Nevertheless, we must begin training. We shall begin with light warm-up exercises."

They were instructed to do push-ups, curl-ups, stretching exercises, and three laps around the shrine. When they finished their warm-up exercises, they were already exhausted.

"Now we shall begin your lessons in fighting." He looked at Sketch, once again sternly. "Sketch, come here."

Jamal whispered in Sketch's ear. "Karasu Tengus are very vengeful."

"Thanks for the warning," said Sketch, gulping. He walked up slowly to Kazano and stood in front of him. "Yes sir?"

"You will be my fighting partner."

Sketch scratched his head. "What do you mean by 'fighting partner?'"

"You will be fighting me to demonstrate to the others how to properly use self-defense."

Sketch jumped back in shock. "Say what?! Against YOU?"

"Correct. Are you ready?"

Sketch shook nervously. "Uh...I guess."

"Very well, then." Kazano bowed to Sketch. Sketch bowed while shaking in return. "Now, young ones, you will see a comparison between a master fighter and a beginner."

Sketch looked sternly at Kazano. "What's that supposed to mean?" he growled.

Kazano smiled. "I see we struck a chord. Let's see if you can fight."

Kazano and Sketch got into fighting positions. Suddenly Kazano disappeared in a blur, and Sketch stood in awe at the sudden disappearance. Suddenly Kazano appeared behind Sketch and began attacking without warning. After a massive amount of hits and karate kicks, Sketch fell to the ground, dazed and stunned.

"The master fighter is prepared for anything," said Kazano. "You are not ready."

Sketch groaned and crawled back to his former place. The girls looked at him in pity.

"Poor Sketch," said Donna. "He looks so broken up."

"His feelings or his back?" laughed Jamal.

"Jamal!" snapped Iris. "That's not nice!"

"He had it coming to him," he replied. "Sketch won't get far if he fights like a brick."

Donna and Iris looked furiously at Jamal. "What?!" The girls proceeded to grab Jamal by his neck, choking him. "How dare you talk about Sketch like that! Take it back! TAKE IT BACK!"

"Okay! Okay!" Jamal gargled. "I'm sorry! Let go!"

The girls let go of Jamal, who coughed heavily after the lack of air.

Kazano shook his head. "Deja vu."

"Gosh!" said Sketch in surprise. "They sure do stick up for me!"

The girls went to Sketch. "Are you okay?"

Sketch groaned. "Sort of. Man, I'm hurting all over!"

"Aww! Let us help you!"

Sketch slowly backed away. "No thanks."

Kazano grew upset. "You are not paying attention to my TEACHINGS!"

The others paused in fear and silence.

"It is evident that we will have to train harder in order to be able to confront our enemy. I will instruct you on the correct methods of fighting and strength build-up."

Sketch grumbled and began heading for the shrine exit. Kazano watched in curiosity and looked at the others to see what was happening. It was evident that none of the others knew why Sketch was reacting so.

"Jamal," Kazano said, "get Tucker back in here."

"Yes sir," said Jamal. With that, he left to retrieve Sketch. About five minutes later Jamal returned. He had two black eyes, a bloody nose, and terrible cuts and bruises all over his body.

"Jamal!" Kazano shouted in surprise. "What happened to you?"

"Sketch needs some time alone," Jamal simply said. He fainted shortly afterward.

Kazano looked to the girls. "Find Sketch. I trust that you will be able to do it better."

"We certainly can!" the girls shouted, and they ran off to find Sketch. Like Jamal, they returned after five minues had passed, and like Jamal, they were both scuffed up.

"We couldn't," moaned Donna.

Iris moaned with Donna. "Whatever happened to the phrase, 'never hit a lady?'"

They also fainted.

Kazano looked at Jamal and the girls and began to think twice about Sketch's fighting abilities. Maybe he is a great fighter! He certainly appears to be a person that is not to be trifled with. He must be a rage fighter. I must have angered him when I humiliated him in front of his friends. I understand his anger... I must go find him and apologize.

With that, Kazano extended his wings and took to the skies in search of Sketch Tucker.
