Chapter 7: The Company is Created
The next morning Sketch began writing up a classified ad to put in the newspaper. He sent it in the mail, hoping that someone would be interested. He decided to check out how Jamal was doing, so he went to his house. He knocked on the door.
There was no answer.
"Anybody home?" asked Sketch.
"No," answered a voice.
Sketch recognized Jamal's voice. "Jamal! I thought we were gonna build that factory today!"
"We are!"
"Then what are you doing?"
"Waiting for you!"
Sketch scratched his head. "But you said you weren't home!"
"I'm not! Look behind you!"
Sketch looked over his shoulder. He jumped in surprise when he saw Jamal standing right behind him.
Jamal waved. "H'lo."
"Geez, don't do that!" Sketch said, holding his hand over his heart.
"I'm sorry I scared you," said Jamal. "I was out looking for a good place to make the factory."
Sketch blushed. "Oh… Man, did you give me a scare…"
"Relax," said Jamal, placing his hand on Sketch's shoulder. "Anyway, I found a good place to build it. It's a very big lot. It's far from the public, so we'll have lots of privacy when we work."
"Where is it?" asked Sketch.
"Folow me!"
Jamal led Sketch to where he considered the factory should have been built. Indeed it was very big and very pretty, and it was quite a distance from the town. Sketch began to share his feelings.
"You're right!" said Sketch. "This would make a nice place to make the factory! Let's call them and see how much it's worth!"
Sketch seemed stunned at what he heard on the phone. "Really?"
"That's right, sir. It'll cost you ten thousand dollars."
"But that's a lot of money!"
"It's a lot of land."
Sketch sighed. "You do have a point."
Jamal tapped his shoulder. "What did they say?"
"Could you hold on a minute please?" Sketch covered the phone. "They said it'll cost ten thousand dollars."
"Whoa…" Jamal thought for a moment. "Say Sketch, what factors subtract from a plot's value?"
"Well, uh, I guess the land's condition. It's worth more if it's not prone to natural hazards, as well as if it's not rugged terrain."
Jamal smiled mischievously. "I've got an idea. Tell them you discovered on the Internet that there's a fault line running through the land they're selling."
"What?! But that's a lie!"
Jamal chuckled. "Not when I'm through with it!"
Sketch looked at Jamal oddly, but decided to go through with it. "To be honest, I don't think such property is worth that much money."
"Well, you have to look at the condition of the land, sir."
"I did. There's a fault line right underneath your property."
"What? We haven't had any recent reports of activity around--"
Suddenly the ground rumbled. Sketch suddenly fell to the floor and looked at Jamal, who held his hands in the air. He lowered them, and the ground stopped shaking.
"What was that?!" said the person on the phone. "An earthquake? Here?"
"I told you!" said Sketch.
"Well, I felt it, so I believe it! And you actually want to buy that property?!"
"You got it."
"Fine, but you're crazy. What's your offer?"
Sketch smiled. "Three thousand dollars."
"That's it?! Sorry, but even that much money isn't enough for the land."
The ground shook again.
"What the?!… Okay. Three thousand it is. It isn't worth getting our company in trouble over. We have a reputation of finding the best plots of land."
"Thank you kindly, sir! So long!" Sketch hung up the phone. "Jamal, you're nuts. But you're nuts in a good way."
Jamal scratched his head. "Um…thanks! I think…"
"Now how are we gonna build that factory?"
Jamal smiled. "Leave that to me. You just go ahead over there and you'll see it."
Sketch was perplexed. "Well, okay…" Sketch began walking to where the plot was, wondering what Jamal was up to. He arived four feet away from the plot, and the spectacle caused his jaw to drop.
A giant factory was there, built high and wide. There was a sign above it that read "The Tengu Company." What was once an empty plot had suddenly become the property of a gargantuan workshop.
Jamal had arrived to the plot and smiled. "So what do you think, Sketch? Do you like it?"
Sketch was speechless. He just looked at it and shook his head slowly, unable to understand how it happened.
Jamal laughed. "Yeah, I think it's nice, too! Hopefully we'll be able to rally up some workers real soon!"
Sketch, in a combined state of disbelief and utter shock, fainted.
